A common question I get is well how do you know God is speaking to you or I never hear from God. After last week post Convicted, God put this message on my heart to let people know how to ensure they are hearing from God. The same way God spoke to me and speaks to me, he wants to do the same in your life.I know a lot of times we may be uncertain if it is God’s voice, the enemy’s voice or simply our own. So let me share the process of how God has personally spoke to me.
Step one: Communicate with God
Seems simple right? Well you won’t believe how many people want to hear from God but are not in communication with him. God wants to fellowship and communicate with us. Just like any relationship communication works both ways. It is vital to establish a personal relationship because through this relationship you will begin to learn how God speaks to you specifically. When I speak to God, I have an expectation that I will hear from him, I talk to him daily, I ask for guidance, for him to give me the words through out my day, to hold my tongue when I don’t need to say unnecessary things or even gossip, when I need to make a decision. I have learned to go to the lord for everything because I know he wants the best for me. So start a conversation with God and watch him start to reveal himself and his desires for your life to you.
Jesus tells us in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
Romans 8:14, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” Equally, this scripture implies that if we are God’s children, if we are born-again, we will be led by His Spirit. Once you develop a personal relationship with God, you will understand that Jesus died for us and the Holy Spirit was left here for us after his death. Meaning Jesus spirit abides in us! So we never have to walk alone again. Tapping into that belief is essential to hearing from God. The Holy Spirit will constantly speak to you in regards to all matters of your life.
As I stated before sometimes it is difficult to discern our voice versus God’s voice. The bible says, “But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (Hebrews 5:14). So exercise that faith and walk with God daily to discern whose voice you are really hearing from.
Step two: How God communicates
God’s voice is a spiritual voice that we learn to recognize as we get to know the kinds of things God says and the kind of person God is by reading the word of God! Jesus said that all those who seek him would find him. Those who have ‘ears’ would hear. It’s all about us and seeking him diligently.
God can use anything to speak his messages. He is a God that exceeds all understanding and can convey a message to us in multiple ways like the words we hear, pictures we see, emotions we feel.
Understand that God wants to be heard, even more than we want to hear back from him. His intention is that we take heed his voice and that’s why it is vital that we know it is from him.
Every word we hear, vision we see or feeling we have needs to be tested. There are three ways we can do this by one asking ourselves, Would Jesus Say this?, Then has the Holy Spirit confirmed it through the witness of others in my Godly community? Finally has the Holy Spirit provided supernatural signs or indicators that it is from him? This is how God reveals his desires for my life to me and it is always in threes.
To ensure we are aligned to God’s will for our lives and are indeed hearing from him correctly always remember that “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (II Timothy 3:16-17).
The Holy Spirit speaking to our heart: “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.(Hebrews 8:10-11).
Seek Godly counsel: “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14). And receive Confirmation: “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed” (Matthew 18:16).
And finally you should have peace of God: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. ( Philippians 4:7)
Dear Heavenly Father allow myself and my readers develop a deep relationship with you. Lord, Your Word lets us know that when we draw near to you, you will draw near to us. I pray that the world will begin to draw near to you today. I pray that they seek your face, your truth and your word for their lives. We want to know you more, hear you more and obey you more. In Jesus name I pray amen!
